WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?
The Sustainable School Kitchen project was created to address the child malnutrition crisis affecting communities in Lara State.
- The rural areas of Lara State are undergoing a severe economic crisis due to the collapse of the agricultural industry and the permanent closure of food factories, which were once the primary sources of employment in the region.
- Currently, 73% of households in this area face food insecurity, and at least 3 out of 10 children suffer from malnutrition.
- The project operates within highly reputable educational institutions, led by religious congregations with over 70 years of service. Presently, at least 33.3% of the students experience nutritional deficiencies, leading to difficulties in concentration, lower cognitive performance, and increased school absenteeism.
PROJECT COMPONENTS
Provide students with a nutritious daily meal during the school day to combat malnutrition and encourage regular attendance.
Revitalize and maintain school gardens to grow fresh vegetables and greens, providing a sustainable food source for the school kitchen.
Teach students the craft of agriculture through hands-on learning in school gardens and raise environmental awareness within the community.
